Education Policy & Funding Reform
Education funding needs an overhaul and should be simplified. With the education tax comprising approximately 70% of Milton's total property tax bill the process should be far more transparent and straightforward. The taxpayers deserve to better understand the process and how those numbers are formulated. Along with an overhaul to the funding process there needs to be better analysis regarding how the funds are utilized. Metrics should be put in place to make sure that certain spending percentages are adhered to with the highest spending percentage correlating to direct student services and the employees that provide them.
Public Safety
I am deeply committed to ensuring public safety in Vermont. This means prioritizing the upholding of current laws and holding individuals accountable for their actions, particularly those with multiple arrests and violent charges. It is essential that our justice system maintains its integrity by not immediately releasing individuals who pose a threat to our communities. Additionally, I advocate for a balanced approach to drug enforcement, where we enforce laws while continuing to support proven harm reduction methods and providing comprehensive support for those battling addiction. Furthermore, I believe in conducting a thorough evaluation of our "raise the age" laws to ensure they effectively protect our communities and offer appropriate pathways for rehabilitation. Together, we can build a safer Vermont for all.
Balance
Currently in Montpelier we have one sided governance. One political party holds such a large majority it gives them the ability to dictate and control discussion and compromise. Bills can be pushed through the process without substantial input from all sides and vetoes can be overridden if needed. (As seen in the 2023 session with a record 6 Governor veto overrides. 5 in one day). This is not a good way to govern no matter who holds the majority and in my opinion circumvents true democracy. Balance needs to be brought back to Montpelier in order to compel discussion and ensure all voices are heard. Without real and often difficult discussions sustainable policy cannot be obtained.
